Red Lake Watershed District tops in state

The Red Lake Watershed District, located in northwestern Minnesota with an office in Thief River Falls, Minn., was the 2010 recipient of Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Watershed District of the Year award.

The award was presented Dec. 16 at the 22nd annual Minnesota Association of Watershed Districts Trade Show at Arrowwood Resort in Alexandria, Minn.

The Minnesota DNR Division of Waters annually recognizes an outstanding watershed district for its leadership and excellence in water management and natural resource enhancement projects.

In delivering the award, Kent Lokkesmoe, director of the DNR Division of Waters, praised the Red Lake Watershed District for its leadership in finding watershed solutions that contribute to flood damage reduction efforts in the Red River Basin. He also cited several accomplishments the district has attained over the years, such as staffing and implementing various extensive long-term water quality monitoring programs, maintaining an informative and complete website, constructing and maintaining various water storage and retention sites throughout the district that included natural resource benefits and enhancement, currently cooperating with the DNR to update the county flood insurance rate maps in portions of Pennington, Red Lake and Polk counties, and continuing to assist the DNR by administering the water allocation program for water appropriation permits.
