BEMIDJI — “Bemidji Leads!” recently presented the Jim Bensen Award for individual stewardship to Cliff Tweedale, retiring executive director of the Headwaters Regional Development Commission.

Tweedale was recognized for his leadership on several Bemidji area projects, including the Sanford Center, South Shore development, the Joint Planning Board and annexation agreements and the Supportive Housing Project.

He also was a leading advocate for internships, helped lead the Center for Community Stewardship and was the leader of an innovative staff at the HRDC.

“Cliff was among a small group that strategized the need and process for the establishment of ‘Bemidji Leads!,’” said Jim Bensen, chairman. “Once it got off and running, his direction and focus was impeccable. The more complex the problem, the better Cliff became in the process of solving it.  He was a master of development and we are going to miss him.”

Tweedale retired on June 28 after 38 years with the HRDC.
